On some tracks the vocals are shared between Kantner and Balin, but it's Marty Balin who handles almost all of the lead vocals, resembling on many parts his stupendous solo albums from the beginning of the eighties. It's commercial, yes, including catchy poppy AOR tunes with heavily-layered vocal harmonies, some bombastic electronic drums and tons of synthesizers, but lyrically has some kind of defiantly message and musically the band adds saxophone (heavily compressed) dueling with the guitar. "KBC band" is a pretty different beast from the typically mid-eigthies stuff. Their lone self-titled album was released in 1986. KBC band (Kantner-Balin-Casady band) was born, and after a 6-month writing period, the group ink a deal with a major label. The duo agreed to form a band with a new sound, and for the purpose they called the also ex Jefferson Airplane bass player Jack Casady. Kantner was looking for new horizons, and soon joined forces with his former Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship bandmate Marty Balin who was playing live with his own band. Grace Slick and lead vocalist Mickey Thomas continued on simply as Starship.

The comments are candid, but they would be easier to make out if instrumental musical beds from earlier songs had not been added to them. There is an untitled hidden track at the end that adds comments about Woodstock and Altamont. (The album comes with a 25-minute second disc of interview material in which Balin reminisces about his experiences with Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, and Paul McCartney. Just don't buy the album expecting the original versions of the songs.

If the listener thinks of this as what a Balin concert might sound like in 1999, it may be acceptable. At 57, Balin remains in good voice, and if the arrangements sometimes aren't as elaborate as on the original recordings, sometimes they are inventive, notably the funky version of "Plastic Fantastic Lover" with a punchy horn section. He also revisits such solo hits as "Hearts" and "Atlanta Lady," and he introduces three songs written by producer Rich Landers ("Until You," "My Heart Picked You," and "Beautiful Girl"). Marty Balin, who has recorded for a number of different record companies in a number of different groups and as a solo act, here sidesteps the problems of licensing tracks by simply re-recording some of his best-known numbers, including songs done originally with Jefferson Airplane ("Plastic Fantastic Lover," "Today," "Coming Back to Me," "Volunteers") and Jefferson Starship ("Miracles," "Count on Me," "Runaway," "With Your Love").
